Lieutenant Navteshwar Singh, a 23-year-old boy from Punjab, enlisted in the military as one of the many soldiers in the Indian Army. In J&K in April 1999, his father, Major Harminder Singh, sacrificed his life in the line of duty.
He had expressed the desire to see his son follow in his footsteps. Navteshwar was born merely three months before his father’s demise. Despite his mother’s initial hesitations, he followed his father’s footsteps and upheld the history of a family committed to serving the country.
It is essential to recognize the fact that this family has served our country through three generations. Captain Harpal Singh who was the grandfather of Lieutenant Navteshwar was a soldier in the artillery regiment and passed to the family a sense of duty and courage. In the following years, Major Harminder Singh, father of Lieutenant Navteshwar displayed these qualities in the Army.
In reality, Major Harminder was awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously in honor of his bravery and sacrifice during a war against militants from Kashmir.
Lieutenant. Navteshwar was commissioned into the 18 Grenadiers, the same regiment in which his father had been a distinguished soldier following his graduation from his Officer Training on Saturday. The ceremony of piping was attended by family members. The ceremony was very emotional for the entire family.
