Jyoti Gondek was born in London, the UK to Punjabi parents Jasdev Singh Grewal, a lawyer, and Surjit Kaur Grewal. She came to Canada with her parents in the early 1970s, initially settling in Manitoba.
She earned his Ph.D. In Urban Sociology from the University of Calgary. Gondek holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology / Sociology from the University of British Columbia and a Master’s degree in Organizational Sociology from the University of Manitoba. Gondek began his political career in October 2017 when he was elected councilor for Calgary City’s Ward No. 3. She has supported different communities for almost 20 years and her experience has provided her with the knowledge needs of Northern Calgary.
Gondek, who was elected Calgary’s mayoral candidate this morning, will replace Mayor Nahid Nancy after an 11-year term. When Gondek took the stage at his campaign headquarters on Monday night, he promised to lead with “courage, confidence, and humility”.

She won with about 45% of the vote, leaving 26 other candidates behind. Former mayor Nahid Nancy tweeted congratulating Gondek on his victory.
